The U.S. term for this vehicle was “The Thing” because of how horrible it was. The Kübelwagen, a German military vehicle from World War II, served as the model for the automobile.
Volkswagen aimed to create a vehicle that was similar to the Kübelwagen but suitable for everyday usage. Despite being billed as a truck, the Thing’s engine was mostly identical to that of the Volkswagen Beetle.
